There is a village near Sakardu, near the Indian border, called Siksa. I was born there, grew up there, and in our village the rate of education in 100% and all over Baltistan. The first high school opened there in 1964 and so my village was very well educated. From my village, if you go to Khaploo there is a big field from there you can view K2 in front of you. It’s peak is always covered in fog and so you cannot see the top. We did not know the importance of K2 at that time. There was a brand of cigarettes called K2 and K2 for us was famous because of that. After, when tourists started coming there, it became famous and now I feel proud.

I moved to Northmoor forty five years ago. Our house was built on the site of the old brickworks, which was surrounded by the rest of the houses that were here, and I think most of them were occupied by people working in the brickworks. It was a very local business and lots of clay pits around in this area were used to provide the raw materials for the bricks. That closed, I believe, somewhere around 1930.
